Glossary

Plain definitions of every specialist term used across MMI

The subjects covered in MMI courses come with a lot of terminology — words from science, from ancient traditions, and from modern practice that don’t always get clearly defined. If a skill or concept goes by more than one name, all names are listed.

Akashic Records
A concept from Hindu philosophy referring to a non-physical field in which all events, thoughts, and experiences are stored — sometimes described as the “Book of Life” or the “Causal Plane.” In modern consciousness research, it parallels ideas about a universal information field.
Explored in A-I2
Analytical Overlay (AOL)
A term from Coordinate Remote Viewing (CRV). Refers to the moment when the analytical mind begins interpreting and labelling incoming psychic impressions before they have been fully received — overlaying its own conclusions on raw data. Learning to recognise and suspend AOL is central to remote viewing accuracy.
Explored in P-I1, P-I2
Astral Projection / Astral Travel
The experience of consciousness appearing to leave the physical body and move independently through a non-physical environment. Also called Out-of-Body Experience (OBE).
Explored in K-I1
Aura
The energy field understood in many traditions to surround and interpenetrate the physical body. In biofield science, this corresponds in part to measurable electromagnetic fields generated by biological processes.
Explored in E-I1
Automatic Writing
A form of written transmission in which the hand moves without deliberate conscious direction, used in channelling and certain mediumship practices.
Binaural Beats
An auditory effect that occurs when slightly different frequencies are played separately into each ear. The brain perceives a third frequency equal to the difference — for example, 200Hz in one ear and 206Hz in the other produces a perceived 6Hz beat. This can help the brain entrain to specific states such as theta (drowsy/meditative) or delta (deep sleep).
Used in S-I1, K-S1
Biofield
The electromagnetic and biophotonic field generated by and surrounding living organisms. Measurable with standard scientific instruments. The basis for energy healing traditions across cultures.
Explored in H-S2, E-S1
Brainwave Entrainment
The process by which external rhythmic stimuli — such as binaural beats or isochronic tones — encourage the brain’s dominant electrical activity to synchronise with the stimulus frequency. Used intentionally to induce specific mental states.
Chakra
A Sanskrit word meaning “wheel” or “disc.” In Hindu and Buddhist traditions, chakras are energy centres in the body — points where energy is concentrated and distributed. The most widely used system identifies seven primary chakras aligned along the spine. Also present in modified forms in Taoist and Kabbalistic traditions.
Explored in H-S1
Channelling
The practice of receiving and transmitting information from a non-physical source — whether understood as a higher aspect of the self, a discarnate entity, or a collective field. Also called Inspired Transmission.

Clairaudience
Psychic perception through the sense of hearing — receiving impressions as sounds, voices, or music. One of the six clair channels.
Claircognizance
Psychic perception through direct knowing — a sense of certainty about something without a sensory impression to justify it. Also called clear knowing. One of the six clair channels.
Clairsentience
Psychic perception through feeling — receiving impressions as physical sensations, emotions, or body-based knowing. Often associated with empathic sensitivity. One of the six clair channels.

Dowsing
The practice of using a physical instrument — traditionally a forked stick, but also L-rods or a pendulum — to detect information through a binary signal response. Used historically to locate water, minerals, and other targets. Understood in modern terms as an amplification of subtle ideomotor movement.
Explored in A-S3

Explored in H-I4
Empath / Empathic Sensing
A person with heightened sensitivity to the emotional and energetic states of others. Empathic ability is understood at MMI as a form of clairsentience — one of the natural psy channels that can be developed with training rather than simply managed or suppressed.
Explored in P-S4
Epigenetics
The study of how environmental factors — including stress, beliefs, and perception — influence gene expression without changing the underlying DNA sequence. Bruce Lipton’s work connects epigenetics to consciousness and self-healing.
Relevant to H-I2
ESP (Extrasensory Perception)
A term coined by J.B. Rhine to describe perception that occurs without the involvement of the known physical senses — including telepathy, clairvoyance, and precognition. Now often replaced in research literature by the term “psi.”
Extended Remote Viewing (ERV)
A longer-form remote viewing protocol conducted in a deeply relaxed or lightly altered state, allowing for more detailed and layered target data than standard CRV sessions.
Explored in P-A1
Field Consciousness
The idea that consciousness is not confined to individual organisms but exists as a field connecting all living things.
Explored in E-I3, C-S3
Ganzfeld Effect
A state of mild sensory deprivation produced by uniform visual stimulation (typically a halved ping-pong ball over each eye and pink noise through headphones) used in telepathy research. The ganzfeld experiments are among the most replicated in parapsychology.
Hemi-Sync
The binaural beat technology developed by Robert Monroe. Uses precisely tuned audio signals to guide the brain into specific states — from relaxed alertness through to deep theta and delta states associated with altered consciousness. Produced by the Monroe Institute.
Explored in S-I1
Hermetic Laws / Hermeticism
A philosophical tradition attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, synthesising ancient Egyptian and Greek wisdom. The seven Hermetic principles — Mentalism, Correspondence, Vibration, Polarity, Rhythm, Cause and Effect, and Gender — describe laws understood to govern all of reality.
Explored in A-S1
Hypnagogia / Hypnagogic State
The transitional state between wakefulness and sleep, characterised by vivid imagery, sensory experiences, and heightened receptivity. A naturally occurring altered state used in lucid dreaming induction and altered states work.
Ideomotor Movement
Subtle, unconscious physical movement driven by mental processes rather than deliberate intention. The mechanism underlying dowsing and pendulum work — small muscle movements amplified by the instrument into visible signals.
Integrated Information Theory (IIT)
A scientific theory of consciousness proposed by neuroscientist Giulio Tononi, proposing that consciousness is identical to a specific type of information integration. One of the leading theoretical frameworks in consciousness science.
Explored in S-A1
